Edge Protector vs Corner Protector: Which One Do You Need?
The two names are used loosely in catalogues. The useful difference is coverage: a long strip along an edge versus a small piece over one corner.

Short answer: an edge protector is a long strip, usually an angle, that runs the full length of an edge — on a pallet it stands on each vertical corner, spreads strap and film pressure, and adds stacking strength. A corner protector is a small piece that covers one corner point of a product or carton against knocks. If the load is a stacked pallet, you want edge protectors; if the risk is a single exposed corner, a corner protector is often enough.
Two names that overlap
Suppliers do not agree on the words. UK distributors such as Macfarlane describe edge protectors as profiles — L, U and O shapes — used to stabilise and reinforce pallet loads, and corner protectors as pieces of cardboard, foam or plastic that safeguard the corners of a product. Kite Packaging lists both under one heading and separates them mostly by job. Some people call a pallet angle board a “corner board”, which adds to the confusion.
So do not order by name alone. Order by what the piece has to do. If you are new to the basic product, start with what a paper angle board is.
Side by side
| Point | Edge protector | Corner protector |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | A whole edge, end to end | One corner point |
| Main job | Spread strap pressure, square up and stiffen a load | Absorb knocks on an exposed corner |
| Common forms | L, U, V angles; wrap-around boards | Caps, triangles, short angle pieces |
| Materials | Laminated paper, plastic | Paper, corrugated, foam, plastic |
| Typical use | Pallet loads, panels, long products | Furniture, frames, single cartons |
When an edge protector is the right call
Any time cartons are stacked on a pallet and then strapped or wrapped. A strap pulled tight across a carton edge cuts into it; film pulled tight crushes the corner cartons first. A rigid angle on each vertical corner takes that pressure and spreads it down the whole height. The Pan American Health Organization’s palletizing guideline for its suppliers puts it plainly: corner boards increase vertical stacking strength, prevent corner damage and stabilise the load, and they should run the full height of the load on all corners.
Edge protectors also suit long, flat products — doors, panels, glass and stone slabs — where the whole edge is at risk, not just the tip. We cover that case in glass, ceramic and stone edge protection.
When a corner protector is enough
- Single products shipped loose or in a carton — a cabinet, a framed mirror, an appliance. The corners take the drops; the edges between them rarely do.
- Strap contact points. Short paper pieces placed where a strap crosses the top edge of a load. US distributor Uline sells these as “strapping protectors” — laminated recycled paperboard pads placed on skid corners under the strap.
- Cushioning rather than stiffness. Where the need is to soak up an impact on a delicate item, a foam corner does a different job from a rigid paper one.
Using both on one shipment
Many good loads use both. Inside the carton, corner caps protect the product. Outside, four vertical angle boards stand on the pallet corners, and short pieces sit under the straps on the top edges. Each item does its own job and none of them is wasted. The count for a typical pallet is set out in how many edge protectors per pallet.
Paper, plastic or foam
Material is a separate choice from shape. Paper angles are stiff, cheap to dispose of and go into the paper recycling stream; plastic survives wet conditions and repeated use; foam cushions. The trade-offs are in paper vs plastic vs foam corner protection. To be clear about our own range: we make paper angle boards in L, U, V, wrap-around and self-adhesive forms. We do not make foam or plastic corners.
Three quick examples
- A pallet of cartons, wrapped and strapped, going by road to Pune. Edge protectors: four full-height verticals, plus short pieces under the straps on top. Corner caps add nothing here.
- A single wooden cabinet in a carton. Corner protectors inside the carton take the drops. A full-length edge board is only worth adding if the long edges are finished surfaces that scuff.
- A strapped stack of laminated panels. Both: U-shaped or L-shaped boards along the long edges under the straps, and corner pieces where the stack is most likely to be knocked by a forklift.
How to describe what you need
Tell your supplier the hazard rather than the name: “strap marks on top cartons”, “corner cartons crushed in a stack”, “edges of panels chipped in handling”. Add the product or load size, and how it is secured. That is enough for a sensible first suggestion. The paper angle board page shows the shapes we make, and our contact page reaches us directly.
Common questions
Is a corner board the same as an edge protector?
In most pallet use, yes. “Corner board” usually means a full-height angle on a pallet corner, which is an edge protector by job.
Can a short angle piece replace a full-height board?
Only for strap contact. A short piece stops a strap biting the top edge, but it adds nothing to stacking strength or to keeping the stack square.
Do I need edge protectors if I only use stretch film?
Often, yes. Film presses hardest on the corners, and a board spreads that pressure. See edge protectors with stretch wrap.
