Transit Damage Cost Calculator
Corner protection is easy to cut from a budget because the saving is visible and the cost is not. This puts both on the same page, in your numbers.

Every figure here comes from what you typed. We have not put a saving in that you did not assume, and the break-even row tells you the damage rate below which this stops paying for itself — because sometimes it does.
02Reading the result
The number most purchase files get wrong
Transit damage is usually recorded as a credit note, a rework order or a replacement despatch — three different ledgers, none of them called packaging. That is why a corner protector looks like a cost with no matching benefit: the benefit was booked somewhere else.
Why corner and edge damage is worth isolating
Not all transit damage is preventable by packaging. Water ingress, mishandling in a third-party hub and road accidents are not corner problems. Corner and edge damage is the subset that a board on the edge actually addresses, which is why the calculator asks you to separate it rather than applying a saving to your whole damage figure.
The break-even row is the honest one
Below a certain damage rate, protecting every pallet costs more than the damage it prevents. The calculator prints that rate. If your actual damage is comfortably below it, buying more protection is not the answer — and you should know that from our page rather than from a year of invoices.
What is not in this model
- The cost of handling a claim — the emails, the photographs, the credit note.
- The customer who does not complain and does not reorder.
- Line stoppage where the damaged consignment was feeding an assembly line.
All three are real and all three are hard to put a number on, so they are left out. The result is conservative by design.

About this calculator
It is a deliberately cautious placeholder, not a measured result from your line. Change it to whatever you believe. If you have a before-and-after from a trial run, use that number instead — it is worth more than any industry average.
It is an order-of-magnitude figure for four boards and strap on a standard pallet. Your real figure depends on leg size, thickness, ply and length. Ask us for a quote and replace it.
Then it is not worth it at your volumes, and we would rather you knew. There is usually a subset of lanes — export, fragile SKUs, double-stacked despatches — where the maths works even when the average does not.
No. If you recover a meaningful share of damage through insurance, reduce your damage rate input accordingly before reading the result.
No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is sent to us.
Want the protection cost replaced with a real quote?
Send the pallet size, stack height and monthly volume. We will give you an actual per-pallet cost, and you can put it straight back into this calculator.
