Packaging for Monsoon Season in India: A Practical Plan
From June to October most of India ships in humid air. Paper board softens, steel sweats and stacks lean. A simple plan before the rains saves most of the damage.

Short answer: monsoon packaging means planning for humid air, not just rain. Paper and board absorb moisture and lose compression strength as humidity rises, and steel starts to corrode once humidity passes about 40–60%. A monsoon plan keeps packaging stock dry, allows extra strength margin in stacked loads, adds a moisture barrier for metal and avoids condensation when goods move between warm and cool places.
When the monsoon window opens and closes
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) revised its normal monsoon dates in 2020, using onset data from 1961–2019 and withdrawal data from 1971–2019. Under the revised normals the monsoon reaches Kerala around 1 June and covers the whole country around 8 July. Withdrawal from north-west India normally begins around 17 September, and the monsoon leaves the south by around 15 October. Actual years vary by a week or more either side — in 2025 it reached Kerala on 24 May.
For a plant in north India, that means roughly the second half of June to the end of September is the high-risk window, with humid weeks on either side. Ports on the west and east coasts are humid for longer.
What humidity does to paper packaging
Paper takes up water from the air until it balances with the surrounding humidity. A short paper by Roman Popil of Georgia Tech’s Renewable Bioproducts Institute gives a working relationship for unbleached kraft: equilibrium moisture content rises by roughly 1.35 percentage points for every 10 points of relative humidity. On that basis, kraft at 50% RH holds about 7% moisture, and at 90% RH nearer 13%.
Strength falls as moisture rises. Popil’s rule of thumb is that a 10-point rise in relative humidity cuts short-span compression strength by about 10%, and box compression strength follows in roughly the same proportion. He compares this with the US Fibre Box Association’s loss factors, which put box compression loss at up to 32% at 80% RH. He also notes the figures are approximations that vary by grade.
| Relative humidity | Kraft moisture (approx.) | Strength vs 50% RH |
|---|---|---|
| 50% | ~7% | Reference |
| 70% | ~10% | Roughly a fifth lower |
| 90% | ~13% | Roughly two-fifths lower |
These rows are worked from Popil’s equations and rounded. Treat them as direction, not as a design value. The practical point is plain: a stack that stands safely in March may lean or collapse in August with nothing else changed. Our article on pallet stacking strength and edge protectors explains why corner support matters most when the carton walls soften.
What humidity does to steel and other goods
The German insurers’ Transport Information Service states that corrosion on steel begins at about 40% relative humidity and speeds up above 60%. It also warns that temperature changes cause condensation inside packaging even when no water gets in from outside. Goods packed in a cool, air-conditioned area and then moved into hot, wet air, or the reverse, are the classic case. Metal parts, machined components and coils need a barrier wrap and, where the buyer specifies it, corrosion inhibitors.
A store-pack-ship plan for the monsoon
Before the rains
- Order packaging so you do not hold months of stock through the wet weeks; smaller, more frequent deliveries mean board spends less time absorbing moisture. Our warehouse packaging replenishment guide shows how to set reorder points.
- Check roofs, drains and the floor of the packaging store. Water marks from last year show where it will leak again.
- Review stack heights for paper-packed goods and lower them where the margin was already thin.
During the rains
- Keep board, cores and angle boards on pallets, away from walls, under cover, and in their wrap until use.
- Use first-in, first-out, so old stock does not sit for weeks soaking up moisture.
- Stretch-wrap finished pallets and add a top sheet before they go to an open dock or an uncovered truck.
- Do not pack cold goods straight from an air-conditioned room into humid air without letting them adjust.
- Protect labels and documents: a wet label that cannot be scanned delays the whole consignment. Use a clear pouch or a printed label that tolerates damp.
- Allow extra transit days and some buffer stock for routes through flood-prone areas, and photograph pallets before despatch — freight forwarders warn that claims can be refused when damage is put down to inadequate packing.
For export containers
- Inspect the container floor and roof for holes and damp before loading.
- Load dry goods only; wet pallets carry water into a sealed box that will sweat for weeks.
- Ask your forwarder about desiccants for long, hot voyages.
Edge protectors themselves need the same care — our guide on edge protectors in monsoon humidity covers storage of the boards themselves, and paper pallets and humidity covers honeycomb pallets.
Common questions
Does damp board recover when it dries?
Much of the strength returns when board dries back to normal humidity, but boxes that were crushed or creased while damp stay damaged. Repeated wet-dry cycles are harder on board than steady humidity.
Is PET strap affected by humidity?
PET is a plastic and does not soften in humid air the way paper does, and it does not rust like steel strap. The load under it may still settle as the cartons soften, so check tension on pallets stored for long periods.
Which months need the most care in Delhi NCR?
Using IMD’s normal dates, late June through September, with humid spells before and after. Check the IMD forecast each year, because onset and withdrawal move.
